J.H.Hall-North M1843 percussion rifled carbine. Very well marked on breechblock and dated 1849. This is one of the rifled guns subject to the "Hall Carbine Affair", in which 5,000 carbines were purchased from the government as surplus, then immediately sold at substantial profit before being rifled and shipped. Contributed to the relief of command of John C. Fremont. Read more in Flayderman 9A-278. The 2nd and 9th IL Cavalry were known to have been armed with rifled Halls. Metal parts have a presentable salt-and-pepper gray patina overall. Stock shows moderate to heavy wear from use, but not abuse, having a small dished-out spot in the right side of the butt and some chipping to the cleaning rod channel, all of which show wear and then later cleaning to smoothed surfaces. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
