Sharps M1853 "Slant Breech" percussion carbine. Serial number 14825. 21-1/2" barrel marked on top "SHARPS RIFLE MANUFG CO HARTFORD CONN. Marked on lock "SHARPS PATENT 1852" and on frame tang "SHARPS PATENT 1848" with serial number. Metal parts show expected wear with a rich patina on the brass patchbox and an uncleaned mottled patina with minimal pitting on iron parts. Pellet primer parts have been removed, as was often done by men who preferred the arm to function as a conventionally capped percussion, deleting the troubled automatic primer. Stock shows a good deal of wear and use, with a crack behind the frame tang and lock, and some slivering above the lock. Forearm has initials "AX" on right side and a sliver missing by frame on right side. Lever catch is absent. Lock is mechanically good. Sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
