Civil War Spencer M1860 saddle ring cavalry carbine. Serial number 59898. Standard .52-56 caliber model with 6-groove rifled barrel as made by the Spencer Repeating Rifle Co of Boston, Mass, with only traces of the maker marking remaining on top of the frame. Metal parts are worn with a natural salt-and-pepper coloration overall with light scattered pitting. Front sight blade worn down from a great deal of campaigning in the saddle. Stocks have been sanded to wear down the moderate handling marks to a smoother appearance, has a long, narrow crack in the left side of the butt in the area where the wood is thin from the magazine tube channel. Has a mark in the forearm from having been rested while firing, and has some gouges and a flake of wood filled in the comb of the butt. Magazine tube is free with a good spring. This is an interesting veteran of the Civil War that obviously "saw the elephant". Mechanically good except cartridge extractor does not have spring. Sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
