Springfield Winchester-Hotchkiss 1st Model magazine saddle ring carbine - $3500.00

1st Model Winchester-Hotchkiss Springfield cavalry magazine carbine. Serial number 936. Standard receiver marking and 1878 dated stock cartouche in left side of stock and "P" firing proof behind the triggerguard. V, P, eagle proofs at barrel breech with "US". Has "HN" inspection mark of Henry Nettleton on top of the bolt cocking piece. "R" marked .45-70 rifle sight, Canfield notes in "U.S. Military Bolt Action Rifles" that "Some students of the subject today believe that early First Model Hotchkiss carbines may have been fitted with standard M1879 Trapdoor Springfield rear sights (not marked "H.C."), but this is unconfirmed." This would make sense, since these carbines were chambered for the .45-70 rifle cartridge and not the .45-55 carbine cartridge that regular "C" marked trapdoor sights were calibrated for. Metal parts are smooth with a light to medium patina overall. Nickeled brass forend cap is hinged to store a cleaning rod, which is absent. Stock is good with a sooth appearance overall, free of cracking, including around the magazine cutoff/safety, a problem which prompted the transition to the second model. Wood does show some scattered handling marks, including several moderate ones. Appears to be mechanically good. Sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
