M1844/60 percussion rifled musket by Auguste Francotte of Belgium, made for the Kingdom of Piedmont (latter day Italy). 10,000 of these muskets were imported by different firms at the beginning of the American Civil War. Unlike many foreign muskets that are difficult to determine whether they really saw civil war service or were later imports, this model was uniquely identified in ordnance reports by its notch rear sight screwed into the barrel tang, which is unfortunately absent on this example. Stock has round marking "A.FRANCOTTE A LIEGE" in butt, other stock proofs, various metal proofs including crown over AF. 40-1/2" round barrel with octagon breech, bore of 18mm or about 0.71". Metal parts have attractive medium patina with minimal scattered pitting. Stock has good edges, does not appear to have been cleaned, shows some scattered moderate handling marks, has a sliver missing from ramrod channel by upper band and some liquid drip marks to the buttstock. Mechanically good with very strong action. Sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
