M1798 contract musket with rare curly maple stock. Almost always observed in walnut, a limited number of these muskets were stocked in curly maple prior to the War of 1812. 41-7/8" long barrel in flintlock configuration. Upper barrel band, ramrod, lock, barrel tang screw, sideplate, and side screws are absent. Metal parts have an uncleaned rust patina overall. Stock has an attractive striped grain with a light added finish, has a couple minor nicks by the buttplate and barrel tang, a couple minor nicks in the forearm edge, and a small diagonal crack in the left side of the forearm just forward of the lower band. Sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
