Interesting M1808 style militia musket with "WHATELY" marked lock. 38-1/2" barrel with British proofs at breech. Has M1808 style sling swivels and a Whitney style lock with brass pan. Has owner name neatly stamped "T.O.WETHERELL" in front of triggerguard and in front of buttplate tang. Metal parts have an attractive brown patina overall with scattered minor dings and some pitting in the barrel breech area. Stock shows average wear and use with some minor worn chips to the ramrod channel, small chip behind barrel tang from recoil, a small crack by the forward lock bolt, and some small cracks at a flaw in the wood opposite the lock. Stock problems are superficial and the wood is free of major issues. Preliminary research by Jack Whittaker indicates a town of Whately located in Franklin County in Western Massachusetts with three men named Wetherell listed in the 1850 Federal Census. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
