Frankford Arsenal Maynard primed conversion of a flintlock M1816 Type III musket. Remington Arms contracted to produce the locks and conversion breeches, which were then sent to Frankford Arsenal to be fitted to guns. It saw widespread use in the Civil War, from the US Navy, to the 6th Infantry of the Regular Army at Fort Riley, Kansas, and the volunteers of New York and New Jersey. This musket's lock is Remington marked at the tail with date of 1858, barrel breech has matching 1858 date. Stock has a deeply struck inspector cartouche opposite the lock. Has long range rear sight, both sling swivels, and correct cupped-tip ramrod for use with a massive .69 caliber Minie ball. Metal parts were finished long ago in nickel and copper plating, probably for use in Civil War veterans' parades and display in GAR halls, which were known to have been decorated with the effects of soldiers. Stock appears free of cracks, has been lightly refinished but preserves good edges, showing just a little minor nicking around the barrel tang and to the ramrod channel. Mechanically good including Maynard priming system, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
