SOLD - Pattern 1777 British Short Land "Brown Bess" musket with "10 REGT" marking on top of barrel. The 10th Regiment of Foot was stationed in America and participated in the battles of Lexington/Concord, Bunker Hill, the New York campaign, etc. The regiment had later service in Egypt for the Battle of Alexandria and the Peninsular War. This musket has a 42" round barrel. Metal and wood have a rich uncleaned patina aside from the barrel marking which was cleaned to expose it. Lock may be a later replacement as evidenced by the bit of wood filler in the mortise in front of the lock plate. Sling swivels and ramrod are absent. Stock shows average wear and use overall with scattered handling marks, some spots of white paint from where it was stored, grain age crack in right side of butt, and a long crack in the right forearm edge, associated with a sliver missing behind the forearm cap. The wrist is broken and slightly loose, showing two period metal plate repairs, one brass and one iron. These repairs certainly suggest American usage subsequent to its British service. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
