Important Massachusetts branded British Long Land percussion conversion musket. One of two known muskets so marked, the other being a French Charleville musket, branded with the same brand (pictured). Lock maker marked "EDGE 1762". British proofed barrel with "RE" maker initials. 44-1/2" barrel is trimmed slightly to just in front of the bayonet stud, likely to improve the accuracy of a worn muzzle. Metal parts have an untouched patina overall with some expected pitting in the barrel breech area. Stock is very good, boldly branded in the right side of the butt in letters just under 1/2" high. Has owner initials "MH" or "HW" in right side of butt above brand and "IM" in left side of butt. Left comb of butt is scooped down very slightly during the period of use. Wood shows expected wear and use overall with some minor chipping around some of the stock pins, barrel tang, and lock mortise, with a small crack by the rear lock screw and some minor slivering to the forearm edges. There is a small line that goes around the forestock just behind the second ramrod pipe up that may indicate a repaired break or restoration, but is impossible to confirm either. Wonderful antique, possibly period ramrod with pewter tip is stuck in place as photographed. This is truly a once in a lifetime gun. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
