French M1763 Charleville percussion conversion musket. 44-3/4" round barrel. Excellent "Charleville" script marking on lock, French proofs present on lock, barrel, and sideplate. Metal parts have an untouched, almost black patina, with some expected pitting in the barrel breech area. Stock is well-worn with buttstock comb reduced during the period, a quality we have only seen on American-made muskets and models used in America, usually explained as allowing space for sighting while wearing large winter coats. Wood shows expected handling marks from many years of use, small crack by rear lock screw, several lateral grain cracks in the forearm, some well-worn slivers from ramrod channel, worn piece missing from lower lock mortise, and some minor slivers from around barrel tang. Honest, complete gun with even the sling swivels present. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
