very early Springfield M1842 percussion musket dated 1845 on lock, second year of manufacture. Barrel shortened by 1/4" to 41-3/4" long, probably to clean up a worn muzzle. Metal parts have a dark rust patina overall. Stock shows expected wear and use, faint cartouche visible opposite lock, having several scattered moderate handling marks, some minor chipping to the ramrod channel, and a break in the triggerguard/lock mortise that is secured with a nail by the triggerguard and two nails near the lock mortise. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
