untouched North Carolina-found Springfield M1842 percussion musket. Well-marked lock dated 1853. Untouched dark patina and rust overall with some scattered pitting, primarily in the barrel breech area. Hammer is replaced during the period with a conversion-style hammer that has matching rust and patina to the rest of the gun. Ramrod and sling swivels are absent, stud for lower swivel was removed long ago. It is of simple manufacture, lacking knurling on the spur, and possibly showing a flaw on the rear where the spur joins the body of the hammer. Stock is equally uncleaned and shows numerous marks and abrasions. Has a couple small dry age cracks, a couple sets of initials present, and minor chipping along the ramrod channel. Incredibly, the inspector cartouche opposite the lock is still present. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
