Eli Whitney "Good and Serviceable" "Enfield Type" rifled musket. These interesting arms were the product of purchased condemned and Whitney-produced parts that were sold to states and militia organizations who were less specific about the quality and standardization of what they were buying than the federal government. They were among the limited arms on hand when the Civil War broke out and this musket seems to have seen a good deal of service. The "Enfield Type", Flayderman 5J-038 is believed to have seen production of about 5,000 and was known to have been sold to the states of New York and Maryland. It is equipped with a Whitney brass-tipped ramrod and Enfield-style rear sight that does not have an elevator. Marked on lock "E.WHITNEY". Metal parts have a dark patina overall with some scattered rust and some pitting in the barrel breech. Stock shows evidence of having been cleaned, showing numerous moderate handling marks, and some slivering to the ramrod channel. Rear sight ladder is cracked at the base on one side but not the other, appears to be stable. Lock works out of gun, but there is interference with the sear when it is installed, so some adjustment is apparently needed, as spring tension is good, but it will not cock. Sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
