Eben T. Starr patent 4-barrel pepperbox pistol. Made by the Merrill company of Baltimore, Maryland, who also made their own patent cavalry carbine for the Civil War. Fifth model style. Serial number S7. An odd cousin to the much more common Christian Sharps 4-shot pepperboxes, except having the rotating firing pin in the frame, a side-mounted hammer, tip-up barrel cluster, and button trigger. Barrel cluster is a medium gray with slightly granular surfaces, brass parts are a medium-light coloration, and grips show average wear and use, being free of cracks and chips. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
