scarce Whitney-Howard hammerless sporting rifle. 27-3/16" round barrel, .44 rimfire caliber. Marked on left side of barrel "C HOWARD PATENTED SEPT.26 &OCT.10.1865-OCT.28.1862" and on right side of barrel "MANUF'D.FOR-HOWARD-BROTHERS-BY-WHITNEY-ARMS-CO-WHITNEYVILLE.CONN." Metal parts are a medium gray-brown patina, showing slight granularness. Stock has a dark coloration, a crack present on right side of wrist where the screw passes through, and shows some wood filler around the heel of the buttplate. Appears to function mechanically, but this was known for not being a robust action in its own time, hence the rarity and why it probably shouldn't be fired. Sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
