Confederate altered S.North M1819 Hall's Patent breechloading percussion rifle. An extensive study of Confederate altered Hall rifles is found in Chapter XXIII of "Confederate Rifles & Muskets" by Murphy & Madaus. Over 10,000 obsolete M1819 rifles found themselves in state and federal custody on the eve of the Civil War in the states that would become the Confederate States of America and while unpopular, the initial crush to put arms in the hands of men would create an interesting melange of conversions, including even a muzzle loading conversion of the breech loading rifle. This rifle, which preserves the structure of the original flintlock cock associated with western theatre conversions, even has the original spur, taken down slightly, with an effectively applied, but awkward in appearance percussion striking nose. The rearward portion of the triggerguard strap with the pistol grip provision was removed in a workmanlike manner and the mortise smoothed out. One example pictured in the study is depicted having had the pistol grip removed. Standard configuration otherwise. Well marked with date of 1835. Metal parts were cleaned at some point with a light gray coloration overall and some pitting present in the nipple area. Stock exhibits the "Hall crack" rear of action from firing recoil. Wood is well-worn with an added finish, has several cracks in the action area with a period replaced piece of wood along the left side of the action. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
