Bears distinctive small buttstock, patchbox finial, chamfered buttplate tang, shaped set triggers, inlay shape/engraving, sideplate shape, and wide lock mortise flats forward and rear of lock. These features are seen on other Smith signed guns and other Huntingdon County makers. Samuel Smith (1823- ) is noted as having been in operation in 1850 in Barree Township. 39-7/8" octagon barrel of 1-1/16" width and 0.47" bore. Brass parts and inlays have a light to medium patina. Lock and barrel have a dark patina, untouched except to show barrel signature, and with some expected pitting in the barrel breech area. Stock has 4 attractive inlays, including two hearts, in the local style. There is also a little reinforcing plate forward of the lock and a football-shaped inlay below the lock, both intended to repair and strengthen a stress crack from the lock mainspring. The wood is nicely grained with mostly a smooth old finish, worn away at the grasping points, and cleaned in one spot on the right side of the forearm where a small piece of wood was inlet to repair a chipped locating pin hole. Mechanically good with set triggers, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
