Marlin Model 1881 large frame lever action rifle. Serial number 8435, made in 1884. Third type barrel marking. "40 CAL." marking on barrel breech for .40-60 caliber. Octagon barrel shortened to 19" long, left side of frame has a period line dash embellishment around borders. Metal parts have a light brown patina overall. Stocks may have had some finish added during the period of use, shows numerous light handling marks from not having been cleaned or sanded. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
