C1860 percussion halfstock plains rifle, marked on lock and barrel "J.HENRY & SON". 34" octagon barrel of 1-1/8" width and 0.52 caliber bore. James and Granville Henry were the third and fourth generation gunmakers of the Henry family of Boulton, Pennsylvania. They were known for selling their simply made product to western traders and people migrating west. Barrel/stock length and bore fit Flayderman's description of a plains rifle in his Guide. Metal parts have a medium patina overall with some minimal expected pitting in the barrel breech area. Walnut halfstock has an attractively executed cheekrest in the left side of the butt, other is unembellished except for plainly shaped toe plate, simple barrel key escutcheons and forearm cap. Nice antique, possibly original ramrod. Stock is very good, showing light wear and use with minimal handling marks, minuscule chip at rear of barrel tang, and a possible grain hairline opposite the lock. Stamp "M" found behind rear of triggerguard, meaning unknown. Barrel key is an old replacement. Mechanically good with set triggers, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
