C1850-60 Smoky Mountain region "poor boy" percussion maple fullstock rifle. Percussion trade lock marked "A.B.SEMPLE/& BROTHER/LOUISVILLE" dating the gun to 1850-61, when Semple was using this marking. Bears features of a primitive gun made in the mountains, including long iron barrel tang, handmade iron triggerguard, no ramrod entry ferule, one iron ramrod pipe, one brass ramrod pipe, and made without a buttplate. 43" octagon barrel of 1-1/16" width and 0.43" bore. Nice original open sights and ramrod. Metal parts have a dark patina overall with some expected pitting and erosion in the breech area. Stock is worn smooth with added oil finish from over the years, has some worn missing wood from sides of forearm toward the muzzle, a crack in the bottom of the forearm, lateral crack forward of lock, and a crack between lock mortise and barrel tang. Mechanically good with set triggers, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
