Fine quality C1860 New York or Ohio walnut halfstock rifle named to owner. 32" octagon barrel of 1" width and 0.38" bore. Ashmore & Son engraved trade lock, barrel marked on underside "REMINGTON CAST STEEL", rifle is not maker marked. Globe front sight, elevation adjustable rear sight, threaded hole in barrel tang for sight, absent. Nicely shaped german silver furnishings with pewter forearm cap. Lovely silver barrel key escutcheons, 4 silver inlays in the shape of a crescent moon with a spear head projection, and a silver octogram in the cheek rest. Inlays especially are very delicately shaped with sharp points, yet are inlet to the stock perfectly. On the underside of the butt, there is a silver nameplate jeweler engraved "G.W.Whitbeck Norwalk, O". Documentation of initial research is included, showing George Washington Whitbeck as having been born in Herkimer, NY in 1831, married in Norwalk, Ohio in 1863, listed as a lawyer with wife and son in the 1870 census in the village of Hudson, Michigan, where he died and was buried in 1912.
Barrel is either a brown finish or very attractive brown patina, lock light gray in coloration, other parts uncleaned with a light to medium patina. The small amount of pitting in the nipple area suggests only light use over the years. Ramrod pipes show evidence of having been resoldered many years ago. Stock shows careful wear and use over the years, having some minor handling marks, small crack by lock screw, and barely visible grain checks by left forearm inlay and behind lock. Possibly original ramrod with metal tip on one end and covered ball puller screw on the other. Mechanically good with single set trigger. This rifle has a humble elegance to it that would have befitted a gentleman living in town like Mr. Whitbeck. Sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
