C1840 percussion Lancaster, PA fullstock longrifle signed on barrel "C Gumpf". Christian Gumpf is listed in Sellers' "American Gunsmiths" as having operated from 1802-1843 in Lancaster, PA. There is also a Christopher Gumpf listed who is in the flintlock period. 41-1/8" long octagon barrel of 7/8" width and 0.45" bore. Nicely shaped and engraved 4-piece patchbox, engraved silver octogram in cheekrest, and silver initial plate in wrist. Metal parts have a light patina on the brass and dark smooth patina on iron lock and barrel, with some expected pitting in the barrel breech. Stock is maple with a mostly straight grain. Right side of forearm has a couple long lateral cracks, a small crack by the lock bolt, and a wrist crack that was solidly repaired with an old screw and small nail. Wood surfaces are lightly refinished with scattered handling marks. Mechanically good with set triggers, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
