Josyln-Springfield breechloading infantry rifle. Scarce, only 3007 made in 50-60-450 Joslyn rimfire caliber per Flayderman 9A-352, with more than half subsequently converted to centerfire. Dated 1864 on lock with Springfield marking and marked on rear of breech with Joslyn patent marking. Metal parts are a smooth light coloration overall with a darker breech block that is either blued or dark casehardened. Complete with sling swivels and cleaning rod. Stock is lightly sanded with a light added finish, has a few minor handling marks. Stock has two precisely done decorative inlays that are not readily visible on cursory inspection, but are beautifully executed and perhaps give some insight into a previous owner. The right side of the butt has a square cross that is done in four pieces of wood surrounding a central square of the surrounding wood. The top of the wrist has a seven-pointed sun-like heptagram that also preserves a central part of the surrounding wood. The numeral seven in Christianity is associated with spiritual perfection, completion, God's work (such as the seven days of creation), and particularly appears repeatedly in the Book of Revelation. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
