Springfield M1870 USN rolling block rifle. Eagle with "USN/SPRINGFIELD/1870" on right side of frame and anchor on barrel breech. Two-line Remington patent marking on frame tang. Sabre bayonet stud on bottom of barrel. Attractive metal surfaces of medium coloration, frame has a blued finish which is definitely old and with excellent markings that suggest originality, but these are not listed as having been blued, so it may be a contemporary arsenal refinish. Extractor is absent. Stocks are good, may have been lightly cleaned, showing a few scattered handling marks and some worn minor chipping along the length of the cleaning rod channel. Usually seen in well-worn if not battered condition, this is a much better than average example of this rifle that had a much lower survival rate than its companion M1871 Army rifle. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
