scarce Springfield Armory conversion of M1884 .45-70 "trapdoor" rifle to cadet length. Serial number 390897. Only 1800 so altered, as described in "The .45-70 Springfield" by Frasca and Hill as arm 19-1. This rifle matches all of the description points described in the book. 29-5/8" barrel. Bears correct "JSA 1895" cartouche for the altered rifle, instead of the usually seen "SWP" cartouche with original manufacture date. Has an additional 3-initial inspector mark behind the triggerguard in place of the usual "P" proof. Has rack number 477 in the right side of the butt painted twice and deeply stamped into the comb of the butt. Metal parts have a plumb patina overall with scattered minor storage rust. Stock shows scattered moderate handling marks and some dings in the cleaning rod channel from use and handling. Has one small crack in the lower lock mortise. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
