Eli Whitney "Good and Serviceable" "Enfield Type" 2-band rifle. These interesting arms were the product of purchased condemned and Whitney-produced parts that were sold to states and militia organizations who were less specific about the quality and standardization of what they were buying than the federal government. They were among the limited arms on hand when the Civil War broke out and this rifle seems to have seen a fair amount of service. The "Enfield Type", Flayderman 5J-039 is believed to have seen production of less than 2,000. It is equipped with a Whitney brass-tipped ramrod and style #2 rear sight. Pewter forearm cap and brass triggerguard bow. Marked on lock "E.WHITNEY". Metal parts have a dark patina overall with light pitting. Stock shows evidence of having been cleaned at some point, showing scattered moderate handling marks, a couple chips in the ramrod channel behind the forearm cap. Butt has an escutcheon plate with rack number "65" that matches a period number stamped in front of the buttplate tang. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
