Attractive C1820-40 percussion conversion New England halfstock fowler. Marked "J.MASON" (Taunton, Massachusetts) on top of barrel Taunton, Massachusetts. Lock marked "Cairns" in script with additional markings that are hard to read. 41-3/8" ribbed round barrel with fancy sculpted breech section, bore about 0.52". Stock possibly of cherry, with wooden ramrod rib often observed on New England guns. Fancy buttplate tang, triggerguard, and silver wrist escutcheon. Metal parts have dark patina on iron parts with a light patina on brass parts. Stock is very good, showing honest wear and use with scattered minor marks, minuscule hairline crack by lock screw, otherwise free of chips and cracks. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
