C1840 percussion fowler utilizing early British barrel. Marked "LANE & READ BOSTON" on lock with part of marking obscured. 40-1/2" barrel of about 0.64" bore with British proofs and maker mark "WB" under crown, possibly William Brander of London, who operated 1767-1779. Round barrel has early "two stage" transitions. Metal parts have medium to dark patina with some pitting on the barrel and lock. Stock is smooth with some scattered non-structural cracks to the grain, small chip by the barrel tang, and chip or dent in lock mortise at upper rear. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
