M1844/60 percussion rifled musket by Auguste Francotte of Belgium, made for the Kingdom of Piedmont (latter day Italy). 10,000 of these muskets were imported by different firms at the beginning of the American Civil War. Unlike many foreign muskets that are difficult to determine whether they really saw civil war service or were later imports, this model was uniquely identified in ordnance reports by its notch rear sight screwed into the barrel tang. Stock has roundele marking "A.FRANCOTTE A LIEGE" in right side of butt, other stock proofs, various metal proofs including crown over AF. 40-1/2" round barrel with octagon breech, bore of 18mm or about 0.71". Metal parts are mostly a smooth light gray coloration. Stock has good edges and an attractive grain pattern, does not appear to have been cleaned, shows some scattered minor handling marks, a few little nicks at the rear of the lock mortise and some small scattered dings in the forearm, including some in front of the rear band, probably from having been rested there while being fired. Mechanically good with very strong action. Sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
