C1770 American made flintlock musket. 41-1/4" round barrel with octagon breech section, bore of about .69 caliber. Military pattern gun with sling swivels and bayonet stud at muzzle. Lock and barrel are plainly made and show no markings, possibly of American manufacture. Furnishings are higher quality and appear to have been repurposed from British and Continental firearms. Ramrod pipes and wrist escutcheon are British in the Brown Bess style, other brass furnishings look to be Continental, with a fancy engraved sideplate. Stock is somewhat awkwardly built with an unusually sunken lock mortise and flat sides to forearm, featuring a British-style "beavertail" carving around the barrel tang. Iron parts have a dark patina with light pitting. Tumbler screw head is chipped partially off. Brass parts were cleaned at some point to a light yellow, front of sideplate at screw is chipped. Stock is well-worn, having some lateral cracks in the sides/edges of the forearm associated with some small slivers, a worn sliver out of the ramrod channel at front pipe, small piece of wood missing over front of lock with crack, stable partial wrist crack behind lock, and small crack by rear lock bolts. Wood overall is smooth from wear with numerous handling marks from over the years. Ramrod is a reproduction. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
