M1795 Type I flintlock musket with earliest, vertical SPRINGFIELD marking at rear of lock as used from 1799-1802. Wonderfully strong lock markings. 44-1/2" contract proofed round barrel. George Moeller notes that due to the exigencies of the War of 1812, new production at Springfield ceased for a period while muskets stored for repair were attended to, and various leftover older parts were built into muskets, resulting in guns that don't fit the "standard" descriptions, which could explain the use of a non-Springfield barrel. Overall patina and pitting in the pan and flashole area are consistent with always having been together. Metal parts have an uncleaned patina overall with aforementioned pitting. Middle and upper barrel band springs are absent. Stock shows honest wear and use overall with minuscule cracks by rear lock screw and in front of lock. Frizzen spring screw shows an interesting old blacksmith repair.
