M1841 "Mississippi" rifle by Whitney, 1855 with Colt factory alteration to accept sabre bayonet - $2250.00

M1841 US "Mississippi" rifle by Whitney, 1855. One of 5,000 rifles altered at the Colt factory by reboring to .58 caliber rifled bore, addition of 2-leaf revolving rifle sight and all-iron ramrod, installation of screw-fastened ring-shaped sabre bayonet adapter. Originally sold to the government with matching sabre bayonet from the Collins factory, also in Hartford, CT. Flayderman 9A-283. Barrel is numbered 7442 and adapter is numbered 345. Barrel proofs are visible, along with fair inspector cartouches opposite the lock. Brass parts are a light coloration, iron parts have a dark patina overall with minimal pitting in the breech area, associated with some erosion to the wood in the vicinity. Stock shows average wear and use with numerous minor handling marks and some worn chipping to the ramrod channel. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
