M1841 US "Mississippi" rifle by Remington, 1848. Variation with "turned down" muzzle to accept socket bayonet, preserving the original front sight and applying a bayonet stud to the underside of the barrel. Flayderman 9A-282. Barrel proofs are visible, along with a partial inspector cartouche opposite the lock. Clearly engraved on the patchbox cover "PICKED UP BY/D.W.HOWLAND/1862." Daniel W. Howland of Binghamton, NY is the only possible match. He served in the 137th New York Volunteers for a little over 4 months before deserting. No return or further service is noted. Brass parts are a light coloration, iron parts have a medium-dark patina overall with some pitting in the breech area, associated with some erosion to the metal and wood in the vicinity. Stock shows average wear and use with numerous minor handling marks, a worn sliver from the ramrod channel, and a small chip in the lower lock mortise. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
