US M1841 "Mississippi" rifle by Whitney, 1851, as marked on lock. 33" barrel of about .64 caliber smooth bore. New Jersey surcharged on left side of barrel, bayonet adaptation being similar to the known New Jersey contract in that it doesn't have a front sight restored after altering the muzzle to accept a .69 caliber musket bayonet (present front sight was added), but instead of being directly stepped-down, the barrel tapers from 0.91" directly in front of band to 0.82" at muzzle and a .69 caliber bayonet is loose on the muzzle. Socket bayonet stud applied to bottom of barrel 1" behind muzzle. Brass parts are cleaned, iron parts with a dark coloration and some light worn pitting. Upper sling swivel is absent. Stock is sanded to a smooth feel, showing a few minor handling marks remaining, some slivering to the left forearm edge, and minor chipping to the ramrod channel. The area of the buttstock at the heel appears to have suffered some erosion from being stored in moist conditions in a cellar or shed. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
